Only 30 days until the Indigenous Roots™ group is off for an incredible 21-day adventure! From July 9th to 29th, these young leaders will be hiking and paddling around beautiful BC, developing their leadership potential and outdoor skills.
Highlights include hikes in Manning and Wedgemount Parks, circumnavigating Gambier Island, and meeting with members of the Sechelt Nation. In preparation, the IR girls have been practicing their outdoor leadership skills, including regular kayaking trips near Cates Park.
With support from BC-based non-profit Power to Be, the girls have learned how to properly paddle—all while singing and storytelling on the water.
During a recent gathering, participants exercised their leadership abilities by identifying the criteria they see as most important for going on the 21-day trip. Themes such as effective communication, accountability and engagement emerged. Over second helpings of freshly made bannock, the girls recognized these qualities of a leader in one another and cheered on each other’s readiness to take on such a challenge.
Stay tuned for updates on the Indigenous Roots leaders and their remarkable journey!
