2021 Program
In May 2021, we are offering an interactive, virtual version of the program. We were thrilled to work with over 150 youth last year after adapting the program to an online format. This year, we are growing the program to invite 200 amazing young leaders from across BC to join us for five sessions of learning, connecting, and growth. Please note that students attend one of the program weeks.
Program Dates:
- Week 1: May 3 – May 7
- Week 2: May 10 – May 14
- Week 3: May 17 – May 21
- Week 4: May 31 – June 4
Learning to Lead™ focuses on:
- Self-Knowledge: identify your values and how to leverage your strengths
- Being a Leader: learn what it means to be a leader and inspire others
- Increasing Confidence: practice sharing your ideas and taking risks
- Being Authentic: embrace and accept your unique self
- Creating Connections: build relationships with peers and mentors
Program Overview
Learning to Lead™ is a one-week program with Zoom sessions every day from Monday to Friday for 2.5 hours. The program will run four times throughout May and June with 200 spots in total for youth to participate.
This program is all about helping youth to identify the leadership potential already inside of them. During the five sessions of the program, students learn some of the fundamentals of the leadership mindset, how to identify and lead from their strengths and values, how connecting with a mentor can support their leadership journey, and how to take action with confidence. There are presentations, guest speakers, interactive activities, and lots of space for small group discussion.
Interactive Learning
Learning to Lead™ includes a series of workshops with engaging facilitation, group-based discussion, individual reflection, and hands-on activities. You will also gain insight from guest speakers and mentors – accomplished leaders who share their candid perspectives on their personal experiences.
Lasting Connections
One of the best things about Learning to Lead™ is having the opportunity to learn alongside other young women. Over the weekend, your cohort will grow into a tightly-knit group, enabling you to connect with other young leaders from across BC.
The girls in your cohort will become your friends and your support network. This is one of the lasting benefits of the program!
Here is what some of our Youth Advisory Council members have to say about their experience of the Learning to Lead™ program.
Participant Feedback
“This was one of the best experiences I have had in my life.”
“I love how supportive the girls were for each other. They have not only become my friends, but also my inspiration and motivation to become a better person.”
“It made me feel proud of myself and allowed me to understand myself much more. I recommend it to every passionate girl who wishes to feel the true essence of being a leader!”
“The part of the program that stuck with me the most would be the values that I learned. I can really identify them and how they play a part in my daily life.”
Join Us!
This program is open to female, transgender and non-binary youth who are in Grade 11 and are interested in participating in a positive, women-led leadership program.
Eligible applicants live in BC and attend high school. This includes public, independent and band-run schools, as well as online and homeschooling. To apply, applicants must provide a letter of support from a nominating sponsor (teacher, counsellor, coach, peer, family member, etc.).
In the past, a teacher or principal might have nominated the first student who came to mind as a ‘leader’– often these students are the most vocal, and are already achieving their goals. We want to ensure that we’re also reaching the quiet leaders, those who aren’t always the first to speak up but clearly want to make a difference and help others.
Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to apply. We include Indigenous knowledge and protocols into our program. We are committed to creating a safe, welcome space for all participants.
Our online application form is still open. We encourage you to apply early as applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Info Sessions
This year, we will be hosting info sessions for anyone who wants to learn more about the program (teachers, school administrators, parents, students). There will be space for attendees to ask any questions about the program and/or nomination process. Register now.
