Minerva BC greatly values the wisdom and leadership of young people and is committed to amplifying the profile and impact of young leaders across BC. There is an upcoming generation of young women who have the ambition, optimism and desire to change the world and our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) allows Learning to Lead™ alumnae to put their leadership into action.

In response to COVID-19, Minerva was presented with a new opportunity to engage a group of Learning to Lead™ alumnae and advance them on their leadership journey. Although initially assembled to help advise Minerva on program content, our YAC became instrumental in not only helping to adapt to an online version of Learning to Lead™, but also in leading in all facets of the program.

Thanks to the generosity of Aritzia, the sponsor of the 2021 Youth Advisory Council and long-time supporter of Minerva, we are excited to expand our reach and to build on the great work started with the 2020 YAC.

The purpose of the YAC is to engage a group of Learning to Lead™ alumni committed to putting their leadership into meaningful action as well as to advance Minerva’s mission to uplift young leaders across the province. This is a space for young leaders to build community, share ideas with one another, and develop crucial leadership skills for the future.

Connecting with a community of leaders is one of the most important aspects of the YAC. Participation in the YAC offers many opportunities to build community, mentor, and be mentored.

Leadership Development

Being part of the YAC after the Learning to Lead™ experience is an opportunity to continue leadership development within a supportive group of peers and help prepare for next steps in the world of work.

Cultivating resilience as healthy leaders is a key area of focus for this group.

In 2021, YAC participants will be a member of the broader Council as well as one of two sub-committees focused on the following themes:

  • Mentorship
  • Communications

The YAC is led by two youth Co-Chairs with guidance and support from the Youth Programs Manager. The Co-Chairs serve as leaders and mentors to the YAC, working in partnership with Minerva to engage, advance, and develop young leaders.

Each Committee also has two youth Co-Chairs supported by the Chairs and members of the Minerva team. In addition to the learning offered through our regular YAC activities, these members also learn additional valuable leadership skills such as team building, how to lead a meeting, and project management.

"I have really enjoyed being part of the Minerva YAC and connecting with alumni from many years of Learning to Lead™! I also appreciate the opportunities to learn from inspiring mentors and gain advice about my future career goals.”

"For me, being a part of the YAC has connected me with a wider community that inspires me, and has encouraged me to be innovative and get involved in a variety of causes. The YAC has also taught me so much about valuing other people's perspectives and learning from others."

"Being a part of the YAC has given me the opportunity to connect with a group of young leaders, like myself, who are passionate about making a difference in their communities. The YAC has enabled me to realize my leadership potential and has positively impacted my leadership journey."
